tucked into just 10 hectares of land, this small but mighty farm in costa rica has been growing coffee for over 50 years. today, it’s guided by max salazar rodriguez, a third-generation producer who, for the past seven years, has been reimagining what it means to grow with purpose. under his care, every step of the process is intentional, every bean a reflection of craft and care.
 
from planting under the shade of native and fruit-bearing trees to harvesting only when cherries are perfectly ripe, finca la isabela is a place where tradition meets precision. each lot is handled with its own rhythm, washed, honey, or anaerobic, with fermentation, oxidation, and drying fine-tuned to draw out complex, expressive flavours. sun-dried for weeks on raised beds, then rested again before export, the result is coffee with incredible structure, clarity, and depth.
 
nena, named after a woman who once owned this land over 15 years ago, is a geisha like no other. elegant and floral, yet grounded in the story of a farm that works with nature, not against it.
 
but finca la isabela is more than its coffee. since 2020, the team has actively worked to protect the land and community through costa rica’s blue ecological flag program, earning a three-star award for sustainable agriculture in 2021 and 2022. with climate change presenting real challenges, max is investing in technology to improve drying, reduce electricity use, and make the farm more resilient for the future.
