the coffee gardens was founded in 2017 with a simple but powerful goal: to produce incredible specialty coffee in a way that is ethical, transparent and fair. from the beginning, the idea has been to create a direct connection between the farmers who grow the coffee and the people who drink it, so every cup reflects both craft and community.
at the start of the 2022 season, the team dismantled their old washing station and built a new one on a different site. this gave them the chance to expand their capacity and support more farmers, while continuing to raise the quality of the coffee they produce.
but the coffee gardens is more than just a place where coffee is processed. it is a project with many purposes: to improve farmers’ income and livelihoods, to create jobs in rural areas, to promote gender equality, to make the supply chain more transparent and traceable, to protect the environment, and to provide farmers with training in good agricultural practices.
their approach goes beyond fair pay. farmers are offered post-harvest bonuses, extra income opportunities, employment, tree distribution schemes and access to training throughout the year. every step is open and accountable. each farmer receives a contract and a buying-record book, price changes are shared by sms, and receipts are issued for every transaction.
this microlot comes from farmers working high in the mountains above the washing station. they carry their harvest down themselves, earning extra income along the way. it was picked in january 2023 and marks an exciting first — an experimental lot created this season. the cherries were fermented for 100 hours under tarpaulin, then pulped and placed into tanks for a further 40 hours of signature submerged fermentation before drying.
the result is more than just coffee. it is a cup that speaks of hard work, care for the land, and a community committed to doing things differently.
